Theories of Clutch Size

1) Reproduction adjusted to match mortality. This is GROUP SELECTION -- "you don't want to overpopulate. " It becomes a matter of altruism vs. cheaters. Cheaters should win and you can't predict birth rates.

2) David Lack: natural selection will favor those that have most young, therefore, the clutch size will tend to be as high as possible. Thus clutch size should be proportional to food availability.
