History 3

William Bartram in 1791 wrote "Travels through North and South Carolina," and has the distinction of being first native American to work on birds (although he was more of a poet than a scientist).

Most know that Franklin preferred the Turkey to the Bald Eagle as our National Bird. The eagle " does not get his living honestly....too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the labor of the fishing-hawk, and when that diligent bird has at length taken a fish....the bald eagle pursues him and takes it from him." The turkey, on the other hand, "although a little vain and silly" is a "bird of courage."
